Hi,

Here is the Dell link to your Dimension 5100.

Click on Operating System drop down menu there and you will see that it was a one off make by Dell.

Dell only Supported and supplied Drivers for XP for that Model; there are no Vista or Windows 7 Drivers available.

In my opinion you should not have upgraded to Windows 7.

As an option; if you can, reinstall XP.

With a Dell, if the option is still available press Ctrl F11 at Boot. to reinstall XP.

Or contact Dell for Recovery Disks

Cheers.

If its the modem that is the problem or the Network Interface Card I notice you mention connecting wirelessly or with a cable. Then, I would strongly recommend you make the investment in a new compatible Modem or Network Interface Card for Windows 7

and have it installed. They are not expensive.

Best,

Andre

You might replace the Modem and/or the Network Interface Card, but that does not alter the fact that the other Hardware on your Computer is not Supported or Drivers offered Graphics, Audio, etc  by Dell for that Model.

I just upgraded my Dell Dimension 5100 to Windows 7 from XP. I am unable to get any internet connection wirelessly or with cable. I think the problem is the PCI modem. From where can I download the compatible driver for Intel R 537EP V9x DF PCI Modem to

work in Windows 7.

This system works very well with Windows 7 64 Bit, most things will work natively however for best results use these drivers:

There is no Intel 537EP for Windows 7 however this is fine as you are likely not using dial up and hence the function of the modem is obsolete. Thus you can just ignore the modem and I advise removing the PCI card for the modem. The unofficial driver set

I list above links you to the system s service manual which instructs removal of the cards.

In the rare case where you still need a modem, you can replace it readily with a Conexant D850 PCI Modem which can be readily found for cheap on ebay and the driver for this modem is listed in the unofficial driver sets.

Note: I strongly disagree with the opinion above where you were instructed to reinstall Windows XP.

Firstly XP Reaches End of Life in 2 days and any XP installation should be considered at risk.

Secondly the Ctrl and F11 combination will not work once system partitions have changed or an OS has been manually installed. This is a limitation of the recovery partition. Moreover I ve been informed Dell will not support Windows XP any longer and will

no longer ship out replacement Windows XP Reinstallation CDs. It is more important to have some support from Microsoft e.g. Windows Updates than no support from Microsoft and no support from Dell.

Thank you for your advice. I think mine is a 32 bit version. I don t use dial up. However, my PC is not connecting to broadband even with direct Ethernet cable connection or with the Netgear wireless adapter WPN111, which I was happily using with XP on

the same computer. Would removing the PCI card resolve the connection issue.

Thank you for your comments. I don t use dial up. However, my PC is not connecting to broadband even with direct Ethernet cable connection or with the Netgear wireless adapter WPN111, which I was happily using with XP on the same computer. The Device Manager

shows the PCI as incompatible. FYI, I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the wireless adapter.
